Some friends and I went to a screening of Libertarias at the public library today. Really good, really intense. I left feeling completely overwhelmed.

I bought this today at Llibrera Rosa de Foc in Barcelona. “[It’s] a compilation of artwork, photos and political texts. “The initial idea we had for this project was to create a visual record of art work made by women in squats and social centers before these spaces become evicted and erased from the visual consciousness of the community. As the project progressed we decided to expand on this idea to incorperate a broader range of political issue rom women interested and involces in different topics and projects. As well as promoting the visibility of female artists working in non commercial spaces, we wanted to provide an insight into the squatting subculture of Barcelona and highlight some of the political activity that goes on there for people not familiar with it…”

Rembrandt’s Lucretia, 1666
“Her mouth is encrusted with blood, which, along with her nightgown and absence of neck jewelry, supports the theme of rape and perhaps the violence that occurred prior to her suicide.” -Phillips, J. from Rembrandt’s Two Lucretias
If you’re interested in art history and feminism, I would suggest reading Durer’s “Lucretia”: Speaking the Silence of Women. The article discusses the many artistic portrayals of Lucretia, a famous Roman who was raped by the emperor’s son. The author, Linda C. Hults addresses rape culture, gender stereotypes and the notion of heroines. I am currently writing a paper on Rembrandt’s paintings of Lucretia.
